Back in 2004, Leonardo DiCaprio spent a lot of his time on the campaign trail. Back then, he was a staunch supporter of Senator John Kerry. In 2004, DiCaprio traveled to about 14 states to gain support for Kerry and to raise money for his campaign. According to DiCaprio, he went to the mat for Kerry because he liked his environmental policy.
Speaking of Kerry, DiCaprio said, “I thought he had an amazing environmental policy. I have yet to hear of a candidate that has compared in that regard. I’m waiting for the right questions to be asked, and for these candidates to give really clear responses to what they’re going to do in a tangible way – not a lot of rhetoric. I want to hear the hardcore facts.”
The question is will he hear those facts? Surprisingly enough, the environment has not got a lot of mention in the upcoming campaign. While presidential hopefuls are wooing the religious, the minorities, and the people that want the war to end, the environment is being left behind.
To date, the front runners in the possible election include Democratic hopefuls, Senator Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and on the Republican side, Ron Paul. When asked how DiCaprio felt about the possibilities within the candidates he said, “I’m still on the fence about it, to tell you the truth. I have yet to hear a candidate that has clearly laid out their environmental policy in a way that is inspiring to me.”
Hopefully for those candidates one of them manages to inspire the talented do-gooder. After all it certainly doesn’t hurt to have DiCaprio in your corner.
