Mia Farrow was most recently in the news when she started an Olympic-style torch relay that went through countries that had suffered genocide. Now she is pressing China to help stop the abuse that occurs in Darfur, a region of Sudan.
Farrow, who is not only an actress, but a U.N. Goodwill ambassador just returned from visiting refugee camps in Chad where she started the torch relay. While there, she told true stories to reporters about women from the Darfur region that survived militia attacks only to be thrown in prison for months while suffering repeated abuse.
According to Farrow, China’s oil interest in the country of Sudan is funding attacks on the people of Darfur. She has urged China’s government to encourage Sudan to accept the peacekeeping forces that will be coming into the country to help Darfur.
Over 200,000 people have died in Darfur since 2003. An additional 2.5 million have been forced from their homes. This is the result of ethic African farmers rebelling against a predominantly Arab central government who has been accused of discrimination and neglect.
Farrow, who has been working to solve the problems in Darfur, is hoping that China will make the difference in what needs to be done. She has recently said that the China, who is hosting the next Olympic Games, has a slogan of ‘One World, One Dream’. However, according to Farrow, “There is one nightmare that China is not allowed to sweep under the rug – and that nightmare Is Darfur.”
It’s nice to see a celebrity doing something good when so many of them are highlighted for their poor and often pathetic behavior.
