In the 18th hour of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, the not so stable Jerry Lewis made a major on air faux pas. While discussing the family of his cameraman Bart, he made the mistake of either calling the cameraman’s one son an illiterate fag or an illiterate fatty. It’s hard to hear which one he says. Either way, it was in very poor taste.
I made the call to get rid of Jerry last year. He has long referred to former “Jerry’s Kids” who oppose his methods for raising cash, as the “cripples”. He’s also said they are worth nothing and have pathetic excuses for lives. This type of verbal diarrhea is unacceptable by someone who is supposed to be helping a cause, not hurting it. He just keeps making the MDA look bad in the long run.
So, what do you think Jerry said? Fag or Fatty? What do you think of his latest effort to bash people on air? BTW, did anyone hear is derogatory comment about Ramadan? I happened to catch it when I was flipping channels. I don’t think that was the right thing to say, especially on a Labor Day charity telethon. With Jerry putting his foot in his mouth one to many times, its to be expected.

Maybe he can get a job entertaining the kids at the Imus Ranch?
He can replace Bob Barker
Are you kidding me? He definitely said fag. One syllable. Fatty, well, that would be two.
Who cares? Seriously? It’s not like it was mean, he just said it. I can’t stand the guy, but he’s like 900 years old and he was going non-stop for 18 hours, let’s see you after that long of busting your butt raising 63.5 million bucks!
Geraldo,
As a “Jerry’s Kid” I found it offensive. When I was MDA’s poster child (now they call them Goodwill Ambassadors) I spent all night up and I never once said anything derogatory on any of the telethons I attended. My first two telethons, as poster child I stayed at the station and didn’t go home to sleep. It’s no excuse for ignorance.
Jerry didn’t raise this money. The thousands of volunteers who work their a$$es off (many who have one of the diseases themselves) are the ones who deserve credit. Jerry is a figurehead, and a poor one at that. I find it offensive that he thinks he can say whatever he feels he wants, on a telethon that kids will be watching.
What about all the overweight and/or gay “Jerry’s Kids” out there? I have many friends who fit into either and/or both categories. Still, he thinks its okay to say whatever he wants. Well, its not. MDA needs to DROP him. I bet they’d make MORE money if they did!

Jerry’s been shootin his mouth off late in the telethons for years now. He doesn’t even care about himslf, what would imply he cares about others? His telethon gig is an act, nothing more, and likely his only source of income these days.
Dr. Jekyl and Buddy Love, or Mr. Hyde and Jerry Lewis?
Jerry Lewis will gladly take money from the gay community while at the same time bashing us. People don’t slip making these comments, it’s what they truly believe but just are able to hide it most of the time. There are plenty of charities out there for us to support. As far as I’m concerned I won’t support this one anymore. Gays and Lesbians should not support any charity that doesn’t support us.l
I don’t care about being called a fag. I’m not that thin skinned. But no charity or company should have a spokesperson that shows their true colors or prejudice. The gay community may whine about comments like this and the rest of the population complains but we are just sticking up for ourselves. All other ethnic, religious, gender etc. groups are right there to stand up for themselves so why shouldn’t we. I even like Jerry Lewis but can’t tolerate a spokeperson who brings this kind of personal agenda to a cause or platform. Would Jerry support any AIDS charities. I doubt it. So why should we support his.
Scott & Do I Care - Jerry doesn’t do anything but make a fool out of the MDA. He isn’t the one doing anything to really help raise money, other than running his mouth. However, the funds DO help people with Muscular Dystrophy.
They help with funding for finding a cure (with many promising medical breakthroughs being studied as we speak). They help pay for a wheelchair and if you don’t have insurance they pay for medical expenses such as clinic visits, visits to specialists, and even Physical Therapy. Those with MD shouldn’t have to suffer because of his actions.
I urge people who say they will no longer support MDA to go to http://www.mda.org and email the national office. Do it for the kids & adults with MD who could use the MDA resources. Let them know why you are no longer going to support MDA. If enough people explain how bad Jerry Lewis is making the MDA look, they may drop him as the spokesperson.
The goal of MDA is simple…If they really do wish to raise money to help people, they are going to want to eliminate anything that is preventing them from raising money.
If that happens to be Jerry Lewis then they will remove him. Sure it looks impressive Jerry keeps raising more money, but as I said before…its not Jerry. Its tireless volunteers who plan, work, and run fundraisers.
For example, groups like Harley Davidson hold fundraisers all over the country, all year long. Then they pool together their money, and a spokesperson presents a check (with funding from all the Harley organizations across the US together as one) to Jerry on the telethon. It is them who deserve the credit & praise, not Jerry.
Also, I have started a new organization to help those with MD, buy equipment they need, that no other organization can provide. It’s called MDP United. All people with MD (or otherwise) who come from all walks of life are welcome to receive services and/or support us. We don’t discriminate nor will you ever hear such foul language come from any MDP United staff member. To me, that’d be cause for firing. Compassion is a must when it comes to charity. If it can’t be shown by the charity staff then what’s the point of having an organization to begin with?
Jerry Lewis is a has-been who has long outlasted any talent he may have had. He uses and abuses the MDA and its clients to keep himself in the spotlight.
He raises no money… all the volunteers do it. His corporate sponsors suck the money from their customers using guilt tactics.
And yes, he did say “fag” in fact he started to say “faggot” but caught himself at the last minute, and clipped it off at “fag”. I certainly hope that the camerman’s son wasn;t actually standing there, and I hope, if he is indeed gay, he told Mr Lewis where to stick his hatred.
If a word passes a man’s lips, it started its journey in his soul and in his mind.
who cares about what he said, everyone talks like that, if you complain about it, youre a hypocrite. go jerry!
all i see is a bunch of up tight pc assholes its just a word people it dont mean anything have you thought of taking it with a grian of salt and letting it drop
Yeah, it may just be a word, but there are some words that are not appropriate to say during a national telethon. Offensive & derogatory words make the MDA look bad because of Jerry’s insensitivity.
There are plenty of Jerry’s Kids that are homosexuals. How do you think they felt when they heard a person who was supposed to be “raising money” to help them, instead made it pointedly clear how he feels about homosexuals?
This isn’t the first time that Jerry has run his mouth either. In fact, he has FLAT OUT made fun of people with Muscular Dystrophy. Jerry has cut down and demoralized the disabled, likening them to people that are less than human because they are, in his eyes, not normal.
Ashtyn (who runs Gossip Giants) actually wrote an article on this over a year ago. In it she says:
In an article written by Lewis entitled “If I Had Muscular Dystrophy”, he explains how he would feel if he woke up tomorrow in that steel imprisonment that is a wheelchair. He goes on to explain that he would be worn out relatively quickly because most homes have far too many barriers for the disabled. I think all disabled and aware able-bodied individuals could agree with that. The problem, and perhaps the true colors of Mr. Lewis, arrive later in the article when he says things that most people will not admit to thinking.
{Jerry Lewis writes} “I know the courage it takes to get on the court with other cripples and play wheelchair basketball, but I’m not as fortunate as they are, and I bet I’m in the majority. I’d like to play basketball like normal, healthy, vital, and energetic people. I really don’t want the substitute. I just can’t half-do anything — either it’s all the way, or forget it. That’s a rough way to think in my position. When I sit back and think a little more rationally, I realize my life is half, so I must learn to do things halfway. I just have to learn to try to be good at being a half a person … and get on with my life.{end Jerry}
It becomes questionable why Jerry Lewis is helping these half-people. One might assume it was to further his career or to make himself feel good. After all, many able-bodied people believe they are good people because they help that wheelchair-bound woman get her Coco Puffs from the shelf she can’t reach. The truth of the matter is that these actions do not make you a good person.
Good people do things because they want to help people, not because they want something out of it. Based on the things we have heard about Jerry Lewis, we can only assume he helps people just to say he helps them, not because he values their input or their lives. If he were to do that, he would have to see them as complete people and not genetically mutated individuals.
If this were one isolated incident, people might assume that Jerry was just going off on a mid-life crisis or was not having a good day, but has since recovered. Unfortunately, that article set many disabled people off and Jerry has not taken to criticism kindly.
When disabled picketers arrive at MDA-sponsored events, Jerry has a tendency to be unfriendly. In the past, he has informed the disabled community not to leave their homes if they do not want pity. And just recently, he referred to a woman in a wheelchair as a “living waterbed.”
Many in the disabled community want Jerry Lewis removed from the MDA for his comments and his actions towards the disabled. Many able-bodied people think the disabled should shut up and graciously accept all that Jerry has done for them.
So, you see, Jerry has said things repeatedly, even about those he “believes” he is helping.
“If a word passes a man’s lips, it started its journey in his soul and in his mind.”
Ronald, this is the best thing I’ve read in a loooong looong time. I am going to print it and put it on my office door… thx
