Whoopi Defends Dog-Fighting Vick on The View

Whoopi GoldbergWhile I am not one to watch The View, from time to time, I pick up bits and pieces of information that has been said on the show. Today, Whoopi Goldberg, the new moderator of the show, decided to talk about Michael Vick and his impending dog fighting charges. Rather than claim what he did was wrong, Goldberg defended his actions.

The defense is due to the fact that dog fighting is more common in the South. Goldberg likens it to cock fighting in Puerto Rico, saying, “There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country.”

Joy and the others were shocked that Goldberg could defend a person who led a dog fighting ring on his property and has even admitted to helping in the killing of up to eight pit bulls. However, Goldberg explains that dogs are not pets to all people. She explains that for some, dogs are a sport.

What a way to make a splash during your first week.

What a pathetic excuse, yah lynchings were a southern thing as well. Shall we bring those back?

#2 Jean White on 09.04.07 at 2:03 pm

no it is not a southern thing. I live in the south and do
not now or ever knew any dog fighters. It is a low as dire
thing and anybody that does it should be in jail

I would call her an idiot for that statement…but it probably would be edited off this website. I live in the South….Dog Fighting is Illegal…as well as any type of animal abuse. Vick had to know that which is why everything was kept secret. Dog Fighting is also a form of Sociopathic behavior…so is lying about it and the false statements of remorse. The man is sick and I doubt psychological treatment would ever cure him. I guess she likes the controversy which is why she said what she did.

I sure hope Whoopi has saved up her penniesi. My family and I won’t be going to see and more of her movies or rent them at BlockBuster. A close friend of ours had their dog stolen in broad daylight by thugs who were later identified as providing domesticated dogs to fighting camps where they are used to train these fighting dogs to enjoy killing other dogs. Of course our friends beagle wouldn’t have been able to put up much of a fight…but that’s the point apparently. I hear they even muzzle the other dogs with duct-tape so the ‘fighting dogs’ won’t be injured in the process. Our friends miss their dog terribly and haven’t been able to bring themselves to get another for fear the same thing will happen again. I presume that Whoopi didn’t know about this horrific side of this underground culture…or maybe she did. Whatever the case, congratulations to her on alienating herself from millions of faithful viewers who have supported her and made her very wealthy and famous. Hopefully we won’t be the last family to find another actress {this one with a caring heart for her 4 legged brethren} to support.

[…] TMZ has reported that the president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk sent View moderator, Whoopi Goldberg an email that details her opinion of Whoopi’s statement on her first day of The View. For those who missed it, on the show, Goldberg defended Vick’s actions concerning his dogfighting enterprise. […]

I agree with everyone here outraged at whoopi. she demonstrated her ignorance and proved that you can be a big star, and still be stupid. Guess anyone can do it. I especially like the response by Michael from Maryland…that really brings it home. I’m just surprised there isn’t more outrage from her statements…why are people letting this go? What about Walter’s remarks about how well she did her first day!!! She should be criticized for her tolerance to these horrific remarks and the defense of a torturing, horrible person.

    #7 RENE on 09.06.07 at 7:15 pm

Whoopi is ignorant . I’ve lost total respect for her.
I’ll never watch the View again.

Let’s get a grip here… people are calling Whoopi out of her name and threating to boycott her future endeavors… GROW UP!!! Was Vick was STUPID for what he did, sure, but for you all to get upset at some one for exercising their OPINION about what he did is NuTz! The woman did nothing to you or to any damn dogs. There are WAY more important things going on in this country for you to expend energy on other than who said what about dumb ass Vick.

    #9 petpal on 09.09.07 at 2:22 pm

Vernae ,people like you are a big part of the reason monsters like Vick get away with MURDER.You are too stupid to realize that the suffering of another living creature is just as important as anything else that is going on in our country . You and Ms Goldberg should both GROW UP and show some kind of social consciense because if someone doesn’n speak up for those poor creatures, we wll be just as guilty as Vick is.

    #10 Jarebear on 09.09.07 at 7:25 pm

Im going to have to agree with vernae on a whim here. People do have a right to their own opinions and so do the rest of you guys. If you feel like you have to boycott all things whoopi, go for it. But im my opinion, she really didnt do anything wrong. She expressed her opinion and we all have them whether we agree on them or not. Its our God given right to have opinions. Its not like she is the one breeding dogs to kill one another in her multimillion dollar estates or anything so give her a break. Its just like how people from PETA go around ruining peoples fur coats. Or people saying whether abortions are wrong or not. The people with the opinions usually arent the ones acting out on them. Hate the people killing the dogs, not whoopi

    #11 M.H. on 09.10.07 at 4:31 pm

It is really scarey when a bunch of people gang up on someone for voicing an opinion. I watched the show. It is obvious that many who are on Whoopi’s case are relying on what the media said and did not actually see her. make her statements — To those of you who obviously did not see the show, Whoopi was merely suggesting a reason for why Vick did what he did and in NO WAY advocating dog fighting. She was also not putting down the South. -Certain media chose to put “Whoopi defends Vick” in big headlines to mislead people. It is so sad that the media has resulted to inflammatory journalism to get readers. — Journalists used to have to just report the facts. Now they seem to publish their opinions and anything else, true or not. What I like about Whoopi is she is not afraid to state an opinion or examine the other side of a subject. Most people will just side with everyone else, say the popular thing, ..even if they feel differently on the inside. — I, too, am a pet lover and against dog fighting. However, I am also a thinker and don’t jump on the “let’s get so and so” bandwagon because the media says something happened. Even if I had not seen the show, I would have tried to find a way to do so before I just assumed that everything said about someone was true.

The last time I checked we all lived in America: home of free speech. Please, people, let’s try to keep it that way.

    #12 petpal on 09.11.07 at 10:05 am

I agree everybody has the right of free speech, however Ms. Goldberg is a celebrity and with that comes the responsibility to watch what you say and use a little common sense when you refer to the activities of a criminal like VICK. I know what she said and I am from the south and I do take offense at her comments about the South and our culture. AS HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE SLAVERY WAS PART OF THE PAST IN THE SOUTH BUT IT IS NOT NOW AND NEITHER IS DOG FIGHTING. I resent the insinuation that the southern people condone this behavior and that it is prevalent here.

    #13 MH on 09.13.07 at 10:32 am

Online reearch of dog fighting in the U.S. reveals that it is a statewide problem. However, it also reveals that many Southern states have had to crack down on it. — I do not know anyone one thinks less of the South or the people who live there. Violent people, who do violent things live in every state in the U.S. and that’s a reality we all have to live with. — Dog fighters prefer rural areas and that is probably why it has been prevalent in some southern states and in states like Arizona:

Harsh reality is that dogfigting is very common everywhere and not hard to find if you know where to look.It is somewhat amusing that something as meaningless as an animal gets national exposure, but an infant can be left in a dumpster to starve to death and it barely makes your local news.Lets try getting our priorities straight here America.PETA also had the opportunity to save the pits that were salvaged from Vick’s property but wrather than find a way to take care of a dangerous animal anounced that it was in the best interest to give the dogs the death penalty.HMMM,seems like unfair treatment, not the dog’s fault.Bet those dogs are very greatful for PETA standing up for them and protecting them. At least PETA got what they truley desired…a little lime ligt and a sense of importance.

It’s funny how people are quick to lean on their own understanding. While Whoopi made a comment relating this activity to being a Southern one, she was not entirely wrong. I witnessed this behavior and made a judgement based on my own beliefts that this was wrong and I would have no parts of it. Now, this could be because I love dogs, have three of them myself. I hate snakes, would I watch a snake fight? probably not because I hate them, but would I care? Absolutely not! You have to understand that all people are different and have different values. To most people dogs are just animals like everyother animal on the earth. I can’t fathom how deer hunting is a sport. I think that’s cruel, but there are millions who do it right? I think we, humans, should indulge more of our time focusing on other humans and how to value those lives first before we spend months, money and media coverage on people/animal relations.

    #17 Scott on 10.10.07 at 12:58 pm

Has it really come to this, the public caring so greatly about what celebrities think? We get sucked in by their charisma, and we find ourselves hanging on their every word, so that we can pass judgment on them? Come on people, who really cares? Whoopi and most other celebs have put themselves on such a high pedestal, that if they were ever to come down, they would probably suffocate in their own stench. I have blacklisted so many Hollywood types because of their expressed views that the Dixie Chicks seem like heroes. It’s a shame too; I used to like going to the movies to catch a good show, seeing the actor or actress on the big screen and wondering if they were anything like the character they were portraying, or even believing that they were because of the great acting job. Now many of them have this great urge to express their freedom of speech, and tell us that we have to accept it. (I do accept it, and that’s what usually makes me not want to support them any more, and that’s my right) it takes the romance and mystery away from any character’s they play in future rolls. I personally don’t care about their personal views. I want to pay them to do their job entertaining me. I want them to take their expensive trips to the exotic places of the world, have their little affairs with other celeb types, and that’s it. Make movies and shut up. That’s what we do; the American people. We go to work, go home, take care of our families, and keep our business to ourselves. It seems like there is a celebrity contest of who can outrage, outwit, politically bash, or smooze with the most despicable people of the world, just to get their face splattered on some tabloid (of which they will probably sue if it turns out to be bad press). Oh, and in regards to Vick. Just another stupid athlete, too young, too rich too fast, and thinking he’s untouchable, because of the Goldberg, and Sharpton types defending him and others like him. What a waste. Grow up Hollywood! Put a fork in me, I’m done…

    Oh, and by the way:

Rosie, Angelina, Brad, Madonna, to name a few; stop buying children, and thinking that you’re making a difference in the world. Again, I could care less, but stop advertising how wonderful you think you are. It’s really pathetic…
