Emmy Awards: Outstanding Drama Series – The Sopranos

The Sopranos - TonyI have had a chance to watch a few of these shows. In fact, some of them I watch on a regular basis. However, there is really only one that definitely deserves to win. I am picking The Sopranos for this one. It was one hell of a season and I was sad to see it end.

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Comedy Series - 30 Rock

Tina FeyThe best show awards are always some of the most important when it comes to Emmy night. This is one of the main reasons that people watch in the first place. When it comes to comedy I haven’t really seen many of these, but I don’t think that matters. Ugly Betty has this one in the bag. It’s one of the few comedies I watch. I have watched it from day one and have been in love with it since that first show.

Entourage • HBO •
The Office • NBC •
30 Rock • NBC •
Two And A Half Men • CBS •
Ugly Betty • ABC •

Winner: 30 Rock

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series - James Spader

James SpaderI have only really had a chance to see three out of these five shows. I have seen all of these actors at their best and worst though and this is one hell of a race. I am stuck between my two favorites and for the record, last year’s winner, Hugh Laurie is not one of them. If I had to choose the race would be between the magnificent Jack Bauer, Keifer Sutherland, and the most feared mob boss in HBO History, Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini. My pick goes to James Gandolfini as this was his final year as Tony and he played it better than could have been imagined.

Boston Legal • ABC • James Spader as Alan Shore
House • Fox • Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House
Rescue Me • FX • Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin
The Sopranos • HBO • James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano
24 • Fox • Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer

Emmy Awards: The Sopranos Receive Standing Praise at Emmys

James Gandolfini was The SopranosI wasn’t going to write on the tribute that they did for The Sopranos on the Emmys. The performers that came up to sing a medley were excellent. However, the thing that caught my eye came when the cast of The Sopranos were announced.

The theme music for the show started and the cast filtered on the stage. A couple of the women wiped their eyes as they stood on stage. The Sopranos family, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn Sigler, and Robert Iler came up from the floor as they walked some underground steps. In the few minutes that they remained on stage the entire audience was on their feet. It is rare to see such a display of respect for any show anymore, but if any group deserved it The Sopranos was definitely that group.

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series – America Ferrera

America FerraraLike in the drama category there are just two actresses that I am really rooting for here. Sure, all of them gave excellent performances and in truth, I like all of them in their respective roles. However, when it came to choosing an Emmy winner for this category I was locked in decision between the beautiful Nancy Botwin, Mary-Louise Parker and America Ferrera who plays Betty Suarez on Ugly Betty. Despite my love of Mary-Louise, I think America has this one. My projected winner is America Ferrera.

Desperate Housewives • ABC • Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo
The New Adventures Of Old Christine • CBS • Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Christine Campbell
30 Rock • NBC • Tina Fey as Liz Lemon
Ugly Betty • ABC • America Ferrera as Betty Suarez
Weeds • Showtime • Mary-Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series - Ricky Gervais

Ricky GervaisI am not a huge comedy watcher when it comes to sitcoms. That being said I am familiar with most of these actors. When it comes to these shows, I have absolutely no clue what is good and what’s not. However, I have to assume they are at least okay if they are up for an award. As I haven’t seen any of the shows I am gonna put in a guess for my projected winner this time. My projected pick is Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock.

Extras • HBO • Ricky Gervais as Andy Millman
Monk • USA • Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk
The Office • NBC • Steve Carell as Michael Scott
30 Rock • NBC • Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series – Sally Field

Sally FieldThis was a rough one as far as who I wanted to win. I haven’t seen all the shows, but like most people I definitely have my favorite actresses. Based on the performances that I did see I was really stuck between two performers in this race. My favorites are Sally Field and Edie Falco. Something tells me that Falco may be the one to walk away with this one, and if she does I couldn’t be happier. However, I am going to choose the perspective winner as Sally Field.

Brothers & Sisters • ABC • Sally Field as Nora Walker
The Closer • TNT • Kyra Sedgwick as Dep. Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson

Emmy Awards for Costume Design

When it comes to costumes for a series I think that it’s going to be a battle between Rome and The Tudors. As for a mini-series well, I didn’t catch any of them so I am going to blind pick and say Jane Eyre.

Emmy Awards for Cinematography and Editing

Due to the amount of awards here, I am just gonna leave the basic picks that I think will win. When it comes to multi-camera cinematography I will give it to According to Jim and for single camera I will say Rome or The Sopranos (probably the latter). I am leaving out the option for Nonfiction programming and Miniseries as I haven’t seen either option, and I am going to do the same for reality shows because I haven’t watched those on the list, either.

For editing in a drama series I will go with Dexter or The Sopranos and for comedy I think Weeds has this one. For Show I will give props to American Idol, which I also choose for reality programming. The other awards I am not going to make guesses on.

Outstanding Cinematography For A Multi-Camera Series

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Casting Awards - Comedy, Drama, & Miniseries or TV Movie

Casting Awards for the Emmys

Rather than do a separate list for each one of these I will say that I’m rooting for the shows that I am most likely to watch. For comedy series I have to give it to Weeds though Ugly Betty is a good choice, as well. For Drama I am hoping for The Tudors though Grey’s or Brothers & Sisters wouldn’t be bad choices, either. Finally for the Casting for a Miniseries your guess would be as good as mine because I haven’t seen any of these.

Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series

Desperate Housewives • ABC • Junie Lowry Johnson, CSA, Casting By, Scott Genkinger, CSA, Casting By
Entourage • HBO • Sheila Jaffe, Casting Director, Georgianne Walken, Casting Director

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series - Elaine Stritch

Elaine StritchI am not sure why Judith Light is considered a guest because she was in quite a few episodes. Perhaps it’s because she ended up in prison (on the show) and it’s likely that she won’t be on much anymore. She is definitely one of my favorites on this list though I am sort of rooting for Laurie Metcalf because her crazed hostage situation on Desperate Housewives was hilarious!

Desperate Housewives • ABC • Dixie Carter as Gloria Hodge
Desperate Housewives • ABC • Laurie Metcalf as Carolyn Bigsby
30 Rock • NBC • Elaine Stritch as Colleen Donaghy
Ugly Betty • ABC • Judith Light as Claire Meade
Ugly Betty • ABC • Salma Hayek as Sofia Reyes

Emmy Awards: Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series - John Goodman

John GoodmanI like the majority of actors on this list, but there is just one that I am seriously rooting for. This one is actually pretty surprising since I do not watch the show. The actor I am picking is David Morse. I didn’t see the episode of House he was on, but I’ve seen him act in a lot of movies and that’s enough for me.

Boston Legal • ABC • Christian Clemenson as Jerry “Hands” Espenson
ER • NBC • Forest Whitaker as Curtis Ames
House • Fox • David Morse as Michael Tritter
The Sopranos • HBO • Tim Daly as J.T. Dolan
Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip • NBC • John G Continue reading →
