I have only really had a chance to see three out of these five shows. I have seen all of these actors at their best and worst though and this is one hell of a race. I am stuck between my two favorites and for the record, last year’s winner, Hugh Laurie is not one of them. If I had to choose the race would be between the magnificent Jack Bauer, Keifer Sutherland, and the most feared mob boss in HBO History, Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini. My pick goes to James Gandolfini as this was his final year as Tony and he played it better than could have been imagined.
Boston Legal • ABC • James Spader as Alan Shore
House • Fox • Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House
Rescue Me • FX • Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin
The Sopranos • HBO • James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano
24 • Fox • Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer
Winner: James Spader
Thoughts: When they said James, for a second I thought Gandolfini had won. Spader joked that he felt that he stole a pile of money from the mob. He had much of the audience laughing. Meanwhile, I am shocked that The Sopranos didn’t win this won or any of the acting awards.

Note: I meant last years “Golden Globe” winner, Hugh Laurie. Wouldn’t want to confuse him with Kiefer. Either way, he’s not as good as the others in his category.

FYI. HUGH LAURIE DID NOT WIN LAST YEAR.
IN FACT, HE HAS NEVER WON AN EMMY FOR HOUSE.
HARD TO BELIEVE, I KNOW!!!
JAMES SPADER????? ARE YOU FRICKIN’ KIDDING ME??
HUGH LAURIE WAS ROBBED AGAIN BY THE EMMYS.
THE EMMYS S*CK!!!!!
YOU ROCK HUGH!!
WE LOVE YOU!!!
Hugh Laurie is lame. He was a winner last year…of the Golden Globe and it was pretty stupid he won. I think he’s the worst actor on this list. C’mon!! LAME Doctor from House with anti-social personality traits vs. the best Mobster in the world…Mr. Tony Soprano? If anyone was robbed it was James Gandolfini.
As for James Spader, he’s obviously doing something right. He’s been around for YEARS. Heck, he was a mainstay in the 80s and he was good. I remember watching him in Less than Zero, Pretty in Pink, and Bright Lights, Big City. If he’s still around to win awards like Best Actor in a TV Series then he deserves it. He does know how to act and from what I can remember his acting is better then the pathetic “whining” from Hugh Laurie’s “crack-addicted” Dr. House.

Of all the blogs and critic reviews I’ve read, you stand alone in your thoughts on Hugh Laurie. His character is so far and away more complex and difficult to perform than the same old seen it a million times before stuff that Spader does (but he does do it well I’ll admit that - but it’s just been there done that).
No-one else could do House. I could name plenty that could do Spaders role or Sutherland for that matter.
